10.8% of Singaporeans Obese

Obesity is becoming a major concern for Singapore. It 'was in the National Health Survey revealed that one in 10 people in the country is obese, which includes 10.8% of the total population, the percentage was 6.9% in 2004.

The survey involved over 4,300 people in Singapore between 18 and 69 and has been conducted every six years. The reasons that contributed to the increase in the rate of obesity are poor nutrition and lifestyle passive.

The people of Singapore have started to take meals outside more, which increased to 60.1% this year from 48.8% in 2004. Moreover, even if more people have started to exercise, but 54.1% of people do not exercise for at least 20 minutes each time.

Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister launched the national campaign of healthy lifestyles in Singapore on Sunday, which aims to curb the growing rate of obesity. The launch event was attended by over 1,000 people who took a dance workout moves in the new Singapore.

Through this campaign, the people of Singapore were motivated to follow the simple guidelines that include a rational consumption, more indulgence in physical activity, association with friends to enjoy life and live a happier and healthier.

"This year, we want to create a social movement, we want everyone to get to see the value of having a healthy weight and see the value of enjoying life by being healthy," said HPB CEO Lam Pin Woo.
